Portadown missed a penalty and had Tim Mouncey sent off as they were held to a 0-0 draw by basement club Carrick Rangers.

Mouncey saw red in the first half following two bookings in the space of five minutes.

Mark McAllister had a 52nd-minute penalty saved by Carrick goalkeeper Brian Neeson after Marcio Soares had been fouled by Aaron Traynor.

It compounded a frustrating afternoon for the Ports who stay in seventh spot in the Danske Bank Premiership, while Carrick remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

Portadown’s poor disciplinary record continued with Mouncey’s dismissal in the first half.

The Ports midfielder went into referee Andrew Davey’s book for a foul on Adam Salley in the 34th minute, and in the 39th minute a late challenge on Kyle Cherry saw Mouncey receive a second yellow.

It was Portadown’s 10th dismissal in the Premiership this season – their 22nd in the last 67 league outings.

McAllister had the best chance of the half, but after being played in on goal the Portadown striker could only nudge his shot wide of the post in the 22nd minute.

McAllister forced a decent save from Brian Neeson in the 37th minute, the Carrick goalkeeper blocking McAllister’s shot from an acute angle with his feet.

At the other end Ben Roy thrashed a decent strike wide of the target from inside the box, while Salley forced a reaction save from David Miskelly.

Portadown were awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute when Aaron Traynor brought down Marcio Soares inside the box.

But Carrick keeper Neeson got down to his left to deny McAllister, with Miguel Chines darting in to clear the rebound.

Salley warmed the hands of Miskelly in the 61st minute with a vicious drive from the edge of the box.
