Jim Magilton rejects Glentoran interest to stay at Cliftonville

Jim Magilton is set to remain in charge of Cliftonville after deciding against a move to Glentoran, it is understood.

The Glens are searching for a successor to Declan Devine, who left the Oval by mutual consent on Monday, and had identified the former Northern Ireland international as a leading candidate.

A formal approach was made to Cliftonville to speak with Magilton, but the Reds boss will stay at Solitude and is expected to be in the dug-out when the sides meet in the Irish Premiership on Saturday.

Magilton, 57, was appointed Cliftonville manager in 2023 following Paddy McLaughlin’s departure and enjoyed a landmark first season, guiding the north Belfast club to Irish Cup glory and ending a 45-year wait for the trophy.

The former Ipswich Town boss, who has also worked with the Irish FA, Dundalk and Melbourne Victory, added the 2025 BetMcLean Cup to his Cliftonville honours by beating Glentoran in the final, before his side were beaten by Dungannon Swifts in the Irish Cup decider two months later.

Devine’s exit came after two years in charge and followed a disappointing start to the campaign for the east Belfast side.

Assistant managers Paddy McCourt and Tim McCann oversaw Tuesday night’s home defeat by Irish Premiership leaders Coleraine as Glentoran’s search for a new manager continues.
