Former Glentoran star set to reject Irish League offers to remain in Vietnam

Former Glentoran striker David Fisher is set to remain in Vietnam amid Irish League transfer interest in the closing stages of this summer’s window.

Fisher arrived at The Oval from AFC Wimbledon in 2023 under former manager Warren Feeney and impressed in Northern Ireland’s top-flight – he scored 11 goals across 27 league appearances during his maiden campaign.

The 24-year-old played 95 times in his two-and-a-half years in Belfast, netting 25 goals in that time, before earning a move to Vietnam with Hanoi FC, where he once again linked up with Feeney, who served as assistant to Harry Kewell.

It’s understood Cliftonville and Crusaders showed strong interest in pursuing a deal for Fisher, but he’s now set to sign for Bac Ninh FC – a side who were promoted to Vietnam’s top-flight ahead of the new season, which gets underway this weekend.

Fisher scored four times in 15 league appearances for fourth-placed Hanoi last term.

Hanoi confirmed Fisher’s departure on Monday, wishing him “good luck and success on his upcoming journey”.

Crusaders are on the search for an Adam Brooks replacement with the Scottish striker understood to be in line for a record-breaking transfer to Coleraine.

Conor McMenamin is departing the Bannsiders after only a matter of months at The Showgrounds and returning to former club Glentoran.

Fisher left Glentoran for an undisclosed fee in January and highlighted the opportunity to “experience a new culture, learn a new language and continue to develop as both a person and a player”.

He previously received high praise from Feeney, who said: “He’s a great lad who’s still learning.

"I was very happy to get him in August as I had a lot of confidence in him which has been proved right as he’s proved he’s more than adequate for this league and is already making a great contribution here.”

Current Glens manager Declan Devine also hailed Fisher’s all-round play after the attacker signed a new two-and-a-half year contract in January 2025.

"David’s willingness to learn and improve speaks volumes about his character,” he told the club’s website. “While his ability to score and create goals is invaluable, his overall contribution to the team – whether it’s holding up play, linking with teammates, or pressing from the front – demonstrates his importance to our system.”
