Former Irish League club set for 'return to competitive level' after withdrawing from current season

Tobermore United have confirmed their intention to “return to a competitive level” ahead of next season after withdrawing from their current campaign last week.

The Co Londonderry club were a consistent presence in the Irish League pyramid prior to last season’s Premier Intermediate League relegation.

Tobermore made the “extremely difficult decision” to pull out of their Ballymena & Provincial League season after 10 matches, but in an interview with the News Letter, secretary Jonathan Black ensured “the club isn’t folding”.

Founded in 1965, Tobermore won three North West Senior Cup crowns – the most recent success coming in 2006/07 – and also collected a host of intermediate honours, including six Craig Memorial Cups and the 2004/05 Second Division title.

Northern Ireland and Manchester United legend George Best played one competitive match for Tobermore – the Fortwilliam Park outfit lost 7-0 to Ballymena United in February 1984 with the famous winger in their side.

There was widespread concern for Tobermore’s future after their decision to withdraw, but in a more positive update, the club intend to return to competitive action next season following a committee meeting.

"The Committee remains deeply committed to rebuilding Tobermore United and ensuring its return to football for the start of the 2026/2027 season,” the club posted. “After thorough consideration of the club's current circumstances and available options, the decision has been made to return to a competitive level.

"The Committee believes that this approach will provide Tobermore United with the most stable foundation for recovery and will allow for the strengthening of club structures moving forward.

"Tobermore United has a proud history of cultivating young players who understand the significance of representing the badge on their shirts.

"This commitment to youth development has long been the cornerstone of the club's past successes, and the Committee is determined to revive this tradition as part of the rebuilding process.

"The next essential steps for the club involve the assembly of a dedicated coaching Staff, which will be followed by the recruitment of players.

"These efforts are pivotal in laying the groundwork for a successful return to competition and in upholding the club's values and legacy.

"The committee extends a heartfelt request for patience from all supporters and sponsors during this transitional period. Tobermore United looks forward to continued support in the future as the club embarks on this important journey towards renewal and growth.

"The Committee would also appeal for any person or organisation, who can potentially help the club in any way, both on or off the pitch to please get in touch with the committee. The new era starts here; the next chapter has yet to be written.”
