Former Irish League star highlights 'one of the best players' who could thrive across the water

Former Dungannon Swifts ace Shane McCabe believes Adam Glenny is “one of the best players in the Irish League” and insists he has what it takes to thrive across the water.

Glenny has been a standout performer during a historic period of Swifts success, starring on their run to Irish Cup glory last term and featured in all 38 league matches as Dungannon recorded a joint-best Premiership finish of fourth.

The 23-year-old has earned plaudits for a string of impressive performances and will undoubtedly be attracting interest from Irish League rivals – and also further afield.

Glenny’s contract at Stangmore Park runs until 2027, meaning the Co Tyrone club are in a strong position when it comes to negotiations with any admirers looking to lure Glenny away.

After recent high-profile Irish League departures in Odhran Casey, who joined Shelbourne for a League of Ireland record transfer fee of £100,000, and Johnny Russell (Crawley Town), McCabe has no doubt Glenny is capable of something similar – but insists clubs better be ready to fork out a significant sum.

"He's very, very impressive,” said McCabe. “He's got it all.

"He's starting to add goals and assists to his game, and if you speak to a lot of people in football, it comes down to those sort of stats.

"He has all the attributes. He can play left-back, left wing-back, he could go into centre-midfield, he's one of the best players in the Irish League at the minute.

"The big question is, he's been doing it for the last 12 months or so, can he continue that run of form? Dungannon will be doing very well to hold on to him past this summer...you see Odhran Casey going to Shelbourne for £100k, I put Glenny ahead of him.

"He's unbelievable, he can do it all. He's in his prime. I love seeing Irish League players going and being a success across the water. I don't think there's any reason why Glenny couldn't have a look at that."

Glenny is yet another product of Dungannon’s successful academy and has flourished under McAree, making 94 league appearances across the past three seasons.

The Swifts chief has conducted smart business, tying down key players to extended contracts, and McCabe believes they deserve huge credit for their faith in young talent.

"Dungannon aren't naive, they'll know Glenny will be of massive interest to clubs, but they want the full value for what they've invested in him, the platform they've given him,” he added. “If he is to move on, Dungannon will have to be rewarded accordingly and they will stand strong.

"They've a good chairman (Keith Boyd), Rodney and good people there, so if someone is coming for Adam Glenny, they'll need to have deep pockets.

"He has flourished brilliantly (under McAree). I cover a lot of Dungannon matches and they knock the ball about really well, they're probably the best coached team in the league, there's no doubt about that.

"Rodney would be up there, if he's not the best coach then he's very close to it.

"I'd love to see him (Glenny) get a challenge and that mightn't be in the Irish League, it could be in the League of Ireland, League Two in England.

"Johnny Russell went to Crawley Town, that's a good move, and I think the likes of Glenny and Steven Scott are well capable of playing at that level.”
