Gary Haveron delight as Larne land Irish League star who 'caused us problems anytime we’ve faced him'
Irish League champions Larne have made their first move of the transfer window by securing the services of “different option” Josh Ukek.
Ukek had spent the past two seasons with Portadown, scoring 15 goals across his 61 appearances, but opted to depart Shamrock Park after the conclusion of last term as he pursued a full-time dream.
The 26-year-old, who also previously spent time on the books of Welsh outfit Bala Town, netted nine goals in the Premiership throughout his first campaign in Northern Ireland’s top-flight in 2024/25, attracting interest from a host of Irish League clubs.
Ukek ultimately remained at Portadown – his involvement last term was limited due to injury – but has now sealed a switch to the Inver Reds.

It’s a welcome boost for Gary Haveron’s side, who have lost star striker Andy Ryan with the prolific Scottish ace opting for a return to his homeland this summer after winning three Gibson Cup crowns.
“Josh is a player who has caused us problems anytime we’ve faced him,” said Haveron. “He’s a big, quick, powerful lad and he gives us a different option to what we have in the building at the minute.
“He was busting for the opportunity to make the move into full-time football, we’re very pleased that’s with us and now it’s up to him to make the most of that opportunity.”
Larne will return to Champions League qualifying next month and are set to discover their first round opponents when the draw is made on June 16 – the first leg takes place on July 7/8 before the reverse is staged a week later.
Ukek has previous experience of playing in Europe, starring for Bala in Conference League qualifying, and the winger insists deciding to sign for Larne was a simple call.
“Ever since I spoke with Gary I knew this would be my destination,” he said. “Larne are the champions, the best team in the country, they’ve had so much success over the last few years and my mind was set when I spoke to Gary.
“The professionalism of Larne, how Gary spoke to me and expressed how he feels my qualities can help Larne all went together to make this move I wanted to make.
“I feel like I’ve picked up a lot of experience in the last few years. From playing in Europe with Bala and then in the Irish League with Portadown.
“Everyone at Portadown has been really great with me and I’m very grateful for my time there.
“I want to come here, develop my game and continue to learn things in a full-time environment.”
Announcing Ukek’s Portadown exit last month, manager David Jeffrey said: “We initially met with Josh some weeks ago and then spoke with him again on his return from holidays.
"It was clear that while he thoroughly enjoyed his time at Portadown, he wants to pursue his dream and ambition of playing full-time football.
“We are aware of the interest of several clubs who can facilitate Josh’s ambition, and it was felt it was in the best interests of all concerned to bring conversations to a conclusion in order to allow all parties to move forward.
“We wish Josh the very best for the future, and thank him for his efforts and contribution to Portadown Football Club.”
