History-making Irish League manager steps down 19 months after appointment as derby defeat marks final fixture

Darren Murphy – who made Loughgall history last year as the Irish League club’s first-ever full-time appointment – has “stepped down as first-team manager for personal reasons”.

A 3-0 derby defeat against Boyle Sports Championship leaders Annagh United on Saturday marked Murphy’s final game, with Loughgall posting an official statement via the club social media platforms around 5.30pm.

“Loughgall Football Club can confirm that Darren Murphy has stepped down as first-team manager for personal reasons,” read the statement. “The current backroom staff will continue on a caretaker basis until the recruitment process has been completed.

"We thank Darren for his effort and professionalism and we wish him the very best for the future.”

It is understood Lakeview Park officials aim to move forward quickly with the process of appointing a replacement but under an acceptance the decision by Trevor Williamson (assistant coach), Chris Chambers (assistant coach) and Stuart Addis (goalkeeper coach) to remain at the club presents some structure to player routine and, as a result, time to conduct a considered search.

Murphy, who lives in the area close to The Villagers but can boast an extensive coaching and management CV, joined Loughgall in March 2025 on a three-year contract.

His role extended beyond first-team responsibilities towards work with the club Academy structure and development squads.

Loughgall sit 10th in the Irish League second-tier table with four wins from 14 league fixtures and next visit Dundela on Saturday, November 7 across the Championship.
