Michael O'Neill feels Northern Ireland star has 'all the attributes of a top young player' despite 'unfair' loan spell
Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill insists Jamie Donley has “got all the attributes of a top young player” and hopes a loan move to Luton Town can act as a positive platform.
Since switching his international allegiance from England in March 2025, Donley has established himself as an important player in O’Neill’s panel – he started in Northern Ireland’s World Cup play-off semi-final defeat to Italy and the following three friendlies.
With striker a problem position for Northern Ireland in recent years, Donley has been O’Neill’s preferred choice to try and solve the issue, scoring twice in six starts to date.
Donley is highly-rated by Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur, who he featured for in pre-season before being sent on loan to League One outfit Luton, joining international team-mate Callum Marshall at Kenilworth Road.

Having scored eight goals and provided 10 assists for Leyton Orient in England’s third-tier during the 2024/25 season, Donley’s progression was impacted by an unsuccessful loan at Stoke City last term.
The 21-year-old made just four Championship appearances before being recalled by Spurs in January and then sent to Oxford United, where he scored once in 13 league matches.
Luton manager Jack Wilshere revealed Donley was one of his top transfer targets throughout the recent window and he has featured in their last five games, netting a first goal against former side Orient earlier this month.
O’Neill has held positive discussions with ex-Arsenal star Wilshere about both Marshall and Donley, and highlighted the importance of consistent opportunities for his international pair.
“When I look at Jamie, obviously the time I had at Stoke, we took a lot of players in the same profile as Jamie on loan,” said O’Neill. “Some of them work, some of them don't.
"What happened with Jamie last year was not really of Jamie's doing. His lack of game time at Stoke was, I think, unfair, to be honest, on the player.
"Then obviously the second loan, he gets injured in his first game, but I still think that in the games he played for Oxford, he did well.
"He actually scored the winner against Blackburn, if you remember, which gave me a bit of heartache at the time.
"The most important thing, I think, for Jamie is just to play regularly. I think he's got all the attributes of a top young player.
"He's still a Tottenham player, he's on a long-term contract there. I think he's gone to a good club with a good manager.
"I spoke to Jack Wilshere at length about Callum as well...I think the two boys being there together will be good.”
