Northern Ireland star 'getting better' as League One boss reveals Michael O'Neill conversations

Luton Town manager Jack Wilshere believes Northern Ireland’s Jamie Donley is only “getting better and better” after scoring a brace in Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers – and revealed he has had conversations with Michael O’Neill about his best position.

Donley is spending the season on loan with the League One outfit from Tottenham Hotspur, playing regularly with international colleague Callum Marshall, who netted a midweek penalty.

The 21-year-old has now scored four goals and provided three assists in 10 league appearances for Luton with Wilshere’s men winning four of their last five matches.

Having started in all four of Northern Ireland’s Nations League matches, Donley has now played five games in 17 days for Luton – and Wilshere believes physical output is one of his biggest strengths.

"He’s getting better and better,” Wilshere told BBC Three Counties Radio. “I love a lot of things about him, but one of the best things about him is that it was his third game in a week.

"The physical numbers he produces are right up there and they always have been when he plays.

"His commitment, his attitude and his desire to help the team first and foremost, and then at times I feel he has periods where he has done really well in games and then there’s periods, maybe it’s a correlation, when the team has lost its rhythm – it happens.

"Jamie has things as a midfielder...he can dribble with it, he has a good passing range, he can commit the next line and we want to keep helping him improve because he’s helping us.”

Donley has been deployed as a striker by Northern Ireland chief O’Neill as he searches for the best solution, starting in each of his country's last nine matches in that position.

Opting to play Donley deeper in his Luton team, Wilshere has spoken to O’Neill about the youngster's best position and can see value in both.

“Potentially, he can do it at international level, against top level opposition, and I actually speak to Michael quite a lot, to get his understanding of it,” Wilshere told Luton Today, the News Letter’s sister title. "He’s a coach with so much experience and definitely knows what he’s doing, I quite liked it.

"I watched the games, he was a different type of nine, he’ll drop down and link play, he’ll bring others into play.

"One thing he’ll always give you is work-rate, he’s really honest, hard-working.

"I probably see him a little bit deeper, that’s where I see him giving us the biggest threat in how we want to play, but I can also see the strengths of him as a nine.”
