Northern Ireland star with 'huge potential' makes League One loan move from Liverpool

Northern Ireland teenager Kieran Morrison has been labelled “a player with huge potential” after completing a season-long loan move to League One outfit Sheffield Wednesday from Liverpool.

The 19-year-old made his senior international debut in June’s friendly against Guinea and is now set for a first extended taste of men’s football at the Owls.

Morrison impressed during pre-season for the Reds under new manager Andoni Iraola, scoring his club’s first goal in a 4-2 win over Sunderland, and also featured in friendlies against Wrexham, Leeds United and Como.

The winger starred for Liverpool’s U21s last term, scoring 14 goals in 19 Premier League 2 appearances, and also played for the senior side in both the EFL Cup and FA Cup.

A first senior loan of Morrison’s career will see him join Wednesday, who were relegated from the Championship last season and sold Pierce Charles to Manchester City this summer in a deal which could reportedly reach £10million.

Morrison had a number of options in both England and across Europe, but believes he has made the right decision after conversations with boss Henrik Pedersen.

“It’s a massive club with great history and even better fans, so I'm glad to get it over the line and I'm excited to play in front of everyone,” he told the club’s website. “Everyone knows that the rebuild is now and I want to be part of it.

"It's a great squad in a competitive league but I feel like we can do really well in this league and I want to help in any way possible.

“Henrik was speaking to me and just gave me his idea of what he wants to happen, and he sold it to me. I've just wanted it to come ever since.

“He wasn't really talking about my footballing ability, he was just talking to me as a person.

"He wants me to become a better person, so that was eye-opening because I didn't expect it from the gaffer.

“A lot of gaffers don't do that, but the only thing he was saying was, at the end of the loan, what type of person would you want to become.

“He's a great guy and I can't wait to play under him.

“I want to show to the fans and show to the gaffer and show to everyone why the gaffer wanted to sign me and why I belong here.”

Wednesday’s Sporting Director, Simon Wilson, added: “Kieran is a player with huge potential – and he has already represented his country and made his mark around Liverpool’s first team.

"During his time with us, he will benefit from playing in front of huge crowds in a high intensity pressing team that wants to play and run forward, just like he is being asked at Liverpool.

“Equally, we hope to get the value of his quality in his time with us and send him back a better player and a better person.

"It was the shortest player call we have ever had – Kieran’s enthusiasm for coming here was extremely strong and he cannot wait to get started.”
