Northern Ireland U21 goalkeeper rewarded with new Manchester United contract

Northern Ireland U21 international goalkeeper Dermot Mee “will continue to provide excellent support and competition” at Manchester United after signing a new two-year contract with the Premier League giants.

Birmingham-born Mee has represented Northern Ireland across various youth levels – he was first called into the U17 panel by Stephen Frail in 2019 while he made his U21 debut against Scotland two years later, racking up four appearances in total.

He started in two U21 European Championship qualifying matches for a Northern Ireland squad which included the likes of Ethan Galbraith, Dale Taylor and Terry Devlin against Spain and Lithuania in 2022.

Mee joined United aged 11 and has gained senior experience through loan spells at Trafford, Runcorn Linnets, Witton Albion and Altrincham.

The 23-year-old has yet to make his senior United debut – he has been named on the bench for three Premier League fixtures and in Europe.

Mee played three times in Premier League 2 for the club’s U21s last season and will now remain at Old Trafford for another two years as part of Michael Carrick’s goalkeeping group.

Senne Lammens has established himself as United’s number one after arriving from Antwerp while Altay Bayindir, Andre Onana and Tom Heaton also currently remain on the club’s books.

The Red Devils have highlighted Mee’s role in helping their senior team prepare for matches across all competitions with a new contract “further reward for his contributions”.

United posted on their website: “The Academy graduate will continue to provide excellent support and competition for the goalkeeper group.

“The Birmingham-born stopper, who has represented Northern Ireland at youth level, has played a key role in first-team training in recent years, whilst representing United’s Under-21s side in competitive fixtures.

"Mee has been with the club since the age of 11 and has also gained valuable experience from a wide variety of loan moves.

“The impressive 23-year-old is continuing to develop with this latest contract renewal a further reward for his contributions.

“Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Dermot on his new deal.”
