Paul Owens relishing task of 'trying to fly a plane while we build it' at Limavady United after first Premiership win

Limavady United ended their wait for a first Premiership win of the season by beating Crusaders 2-1 at Seaview on Saturday.

Former Crues duo Philip Lowry and Jamie McGonigle returned to haunt their old team before Elliot Dunlop gave the hosts a lifeline with a fine curling strike.

Here’s what Limavady manager Paul Owens had to say after the match:

WHAT’S YOUR INITIAL REACTION? RELIEF? DELIGHT?

"All of that.

"I don't know what kind of noises come from outside the dressing room, but in there it's been very relaxed and it's been very calm.

"I genuinely feel out of the four performances we've improved every week and we've been close in all four games.

"We've had huge chances at 0-0 and when we conceded that first goal in the previous games, you did feel a wee drop in confidence.

"I was convinced and even talked about it this week and before the game, if we get this first goal, I think we'll be a different animal.

"After a slow start, once we were relaxed, we got a trademark goal, brilliant work from Alfie Gaston.

"I thought we were really, really strong and convincing winners in the end.”

WAS IT THE PLAN TO SIT DEEP AND SOAK UP PRESSURE?

"It's never the philosophy to sit deep unless we're up against good teams who keep the ball well and we try to do that ourselves.

"There was a wee tweak tactically there, there's no point telling any lies about it.

"I thought Stevie (Lowry) had looked a wee bit exposed with us being a wee bit too adventurous with the ball.

"We seen today whenever we closed the gaps...Stevie was ‘Man of the Match’, he was outstanding with how much turnover he had.

"It was just a wee bit more tactical, same formation, same everything, just a wee bit more compact and a wee bit more aggressive in our final third.

"We knew with the quality we have and the young players and Jamie's added that real bit of quality to that top end of the pitch.

"Now we look a real threat going forward...we scored two and maybe could have scored a couple more.”

DID YOU WORRY ABOUT THE START TO THE SEASON?

"I didn't...I've got a new member of staff here who works a lot in psychology, that's his background and he's brilliant.

"He made a brilliant statement to me last week and he says, ‘we're trying to fly a plane while we build it’.

"We've got a new pitch, we've got new staff, there's been a lot of turnover of staff, a lot of turnover of players.

"I think we're a little bit different than the Bangor’s in all the previous years.

"I genuinely feel we'll improve as the season goes on with the young players we have and getting used to the new pitch.

"The bottom line is all top teams are coming to our venue and enjoying playing on our pitch just as much as we are.

“I do feel we can grow. There was no change of plan, there's no big, ‘we need to scrap the tactics and do something else’.

"It was literally just keep instilling that wee bit of belief.

"First goals are massive. When we got that today, we seen a different side of us. Hopefully we can keep going now.”
