'Probably that’s it finished': Republic of Ireland manager gives Ceadach O'Neill view after Northern Ireland selection

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has conceded “probably that’s it finished” in their pursuit of Ceadach O’Neill after the Arsenal teenager was selected in Northern Ireland’s squad for upcoming Nations League fixtures – but declared “I just wish him the best”.

Speculation has surrounded O’Neill’s international future in recent months after the 18-year-old, who made two friendly appearances for Northern Ireland in June, was approached by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) about representing the Republic of Ireland.

O’Neill has played for Northern Ireland throughout his youth career and was promoted to the senior squad after impressing for Arsenal’s U21s last season.

FAI Director of Football John Martin outlined how the association would adopt a more aggressive approach in recruiting players who are eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland, stating “asking the question is the bare minimum we should be doing”.

Any player born in Northern Ireland is eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland, but players can only make one international transfer with FIFA.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill blasted the FAI’s approach over Arsenal teen O’Neill, saying: “Putting a young player in a position to make an international transfer before he's been a professional for even two years is, I think, not the right thing.

"It's not something that any association should be doing.”

If O’Neill were to make an appearance in any of Northern Ireland’s four Nations League matches across September and October, he would have to wait until he’s 21 to switch allegiance, while he would be unable to transfer at any stage if he registers four caps.

Hallgrimsson has appeared to concede defeat over the battle for O’Neill, who he said he hasn’t watched play.

“I have not been involved in it much,” said Hallgrimsson on Thursday after announcing his squad. “I just heard of it but I haven’t been involved.

"He was selected for the North so if he’s playing for the North then probably that’s it finished.

“I can’t say I’ve seen him play, maybe some highlights at one point but everybody rates him highly so whatever his decision is I just wish him the best. He’s a still a young kid.”
