'There’s more to come from him': Duncan Ferguson backing first signing to make Glentoran impact

Glentoran manager Duncan Ferguson believes “there’s more to come” from Nathan Shaw after making the English winger his first signing at The Oval.

Having trained with the Glens in recent weeks, Shaw has signed a contract until the end of this season and will reunite with former boss Ferguson in Northern Ireland’s top-flight.

The 25-year-old, who started his career with Blackpool, worked under the Everton legend during a spell at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Shaw contributed 20 goals and 19 assists in 141 matches across stints in Scotland at Inverness and Morton – his most recent club.

Described as a “left-footed winger comfortable on either flank”, Ferguson believes Shaw can make his mark in the Premiership.

“We wanted to strengthen in the wide areas, and he was a player I wanted because I know what he can offer,” said Ferguson. “He gives us a left-footed option on either side.

"He can beat a defender and deliver into the box, or come inside and get a shot away. He’s shown he can score and create goals, and we want him doing that here.

“We’ve got players who can attack balls into the box, so the service we give them is important. Nathan can help us with that, but I also want him getting into scoring positions himself.

“He’s done well during his time in training. He’s approached every session with the right attitude, taken on what we’ve asked and fitted in with the group.

“I know where I can push him, and there’s more to come from him.

"He’ll have to compete for his place, but he has the ability to make a contribution. I want him to back himself and be positive when he gets his opportunity.”

On joining the Glens, Shaw said: “When Duncan asked me to come over, I jumped at the chance.

"The opportunity to join a club like Glentoran and be part of what he wants to achieve here really appealed to me.

“I’ve been here for the past couple of weeks, and that’s made me even more certain this is where I want to be. You quickly get a sense of how big the club is, how much it means to people and the expectation to compete for trophies.

“You can see how determined Duncan is to bring success here. He’s putting the hours in and is very hands-on in training.

"He’ll stop a session, show you what he wants and work through it until everyone understands their job and how he wants the team to play.

“I’ve really enjoyed that approach. He demands a lot, but he takes the time to help you improve and gives you the confidence to express yourself.

“The lads have been brilliant with me. There’s a lot of quality in the squad, and you feel that in training every day. It makes you want to raise your own level.

“Everything I’ve seen tells me the club is geared towards success. I want to play my part by creating chances, scoring goals and helping the team win. I know I have to earn my place, and I’m determined to do that.

“I’ve had time to settle in and get to know everyone. Now I can’t wait to pull on the shirt and show the supporters what I can do at The BetMcLean Oval.”
