Ian McClure is back on the title trail in AIIB National Championships

Ian McClure has the chance to enhance his already impressive reputation in the AIIB National Championships at the County Antrim Indoor Bowls Club over the weekend.

The Ballybrakes Community man already has 11 indoor titles to his name, but he could improve on that come Sunday night as the national fours trophy is again in his sights.

McClure will team up with Aidan Reid, Stephen Falls and Derek Smith for a semi final showdown against Belfast’s Matt Martin, Maurice McKeown, Jim Fraser and Mark Leckey tomorrow morning.

“I’ve a decent record in the national championships, but you can take nothing for granted,” said McClure, who was a double medal winner in last month’s Atlantic Championships in Cyprus, lifting gold in the pairs and bronze in the fours.

“What’s happened in the past is now history. I’ve 11 national indoor titles, but I know we’ll have to be at our best to improve on that.

“Every player has played an enormous of games to get his far . . . they are here on merit, so you simply have to focus on the game in front of you.”

Due to duplication, the semi finals will get under way tomorrow night. Falls teams up with Nigel Robinson, facing County Antrim’s Rod Coleman and James Caldwell in the pairs. At the same time, John McCullough and Simon Martin (Belfast) will line out against Sam Barkley and Alistair Coleman (County Antrim).

Former singles winner Mark McPeak is involved in the triples this time. He teams up tomorrow morning with Roy Battersby and Stuart Bennett for a battle with Alistair Kennedy, Willie McCaw and Kelly, who was on the winning rostrum along with McClure in that Atlantic pairs success.

Martin and Coleman will then adjust their sights on Saturday morning -- this time in the singles discipline.

Coleman is due to face his club colleague Andy Kyle, while Martin, the only former winner of the title involved, goes in against County Antrim’s Trevor Robinson.

They are among a posse of players doubly engaged. Rod Coleman and Caldwell are involved in the senior fours; McCaw will skip his Ballybrakes rink in the fours, while Nigel Robinson will feature in the triples.

Meanwhile, Chloe Watson will be on the hunt for a ‘clean sweep’ of trophies in the IWIBA Natonal Championships that run in tandem with the men’s event.

The Belfast player will feature in the semi finals of the final of both the Singles and Under-25 singles . . . and the semi finals of the three other disciplines.

* Donegal will put their IIBA Women’s Inter-zone Championship on the line when they entertain Oriel at Raphoe in a quarter final clash tomorrow.

The holders were pushed right to the wire by a battling Monaghan side last time out early last month, winning by only two shots.

Gerry O’Hare’s Oriel, who last lifted the title in 2013, will be a different proposition.

The Oriel Men’s team roared into the semi final’s of the Boomer Cup last weekend . . . and it would be no surprise if the ladies followed their lead.

North West, the 2014 McIlroy Cup winners, turned on the power to ease past the challenge from Lisburn last time out, but now face the long trek to Cork next time out.

And, Armagh, who haven’t hand their hands on the trophy since 2011, face a tricky away day at Mid Tyrone.
