Armoy Road Races: Richard Cooper crashes out while leading Lightweight race as rain arrives at Co Antrim meeting

James Doy won the Lightweight race at the Bayview Hotel Armoy Road Races on Saturday after event newcomer Richard Cooper crashed out while leading.

With light raining falling, pole man Cooper slipped off the Ryan Farquhar-prepared Kawasaki 450 at Church bends, but was quickly up on his feet.

The Nottingham rider is competing at the Co Antrim meeting for the first time and finished on the podium in third at his first attempt in Friday’s opening Supertwin race, riding Farquhar’s KMR Kawasaki.

Cooper also finished an impressive fourth on the BPE by Russell Racing Yamaha in the opening Supertwin race on Friday.

In the Moto3/125GP race, Germany’s Chris Meyer (Honda 250) earned his sixth victory at Armoy, beating Barry Davidson (Trison McMullan Racing Honda 250) by 6.3s in damp conditions around the three-mile course.

Irish road racing stalwart Nigel Moore finished third on his Honda 250, one second further back, with Magherafelt’s Gary Jordan taking fourth (Honda 250).
