Ulster counting cost of injuries as Ireland Six Nations star Robert Baloucoune set to miss three months

Ulster have been dealt a significant blow with the loss of Ireland Six Nations star Rob Baloucoune, who is set to be out for three months due to an elbow injury.

Richie Murphy’s side are preparing for a crunch URC match against Connacht at Ravenhill on Friday evening, when Ulster will also be without Cormac Izuchukwu, James Hume and Dave Shanahan, who are all sidelined due to concussions suffered in last week’s win over Edinburgh.

Baloucoune was instrumental for Ireland during this year’s Six Nations, crossing the line three times in four matches. The talented wing picked up the injury while helping secure Ireland's Triple Crown in last weekend’s victory over Scotland.

Ulster have since confirmed that Baloucoune will require surgery, with the 28-year-old expected to be sidelined for the province’s remaining United Rugby Championship regular-season fixtures, as well as the crucial Challenge Cup last-16 tie against the Ospreys in April.

The Enniskillen native’s return to the international stage was marked by a try against Italy, followed by scores in Ireland’s record-breaking win over England and last week’s triumph against Scotland in Dublin.

His impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, earning him the Six Nations 'Rising Player' accolade and high praise from Ireland head coach Andy Farrell. Farrell will be hoping Baloucoune is fit for Ireland’s Nations Championship campaign in July, with fixtures scheduled against Australia, Japan and New Zealand.

Jude Postlethwaite, who featured in the Six Nations squad, is out for several weeks with a hand fracture, while versatile back Jake Flannery is nursing a shoulder problem.

In addition, second row Harry Sheridan is suspended following his red card against Edinburgh.
