Top entry for Meadows events

The Baileys Horsefeeds Flexi Eventing show at the Meadows on Saturday has certainly gone into the record books as the busiest unaffiliated one day show in the Centre's history.

There were three dressage arenas in operation and the busy judges carried out a large number of tests, being impressed with the overall standard of horses and riders.

It was a very exciting day for Charlotte Dixon from Broughshane, who was presenting her ‘Christmas Present’ at his first show.

Thirteen year old Zermie was purchased from England and the very striking gelding certainly impressed the dressage judge, Angeline Nicholson, who promoted him to the top of the class by a fraction over second placed Suzanne Jordan on Goldie. Zermie has plenty of talent, gaining an impressive double clear in the 1.10m.

This combination is definitely one to watch out for in the new season. He has big shoes to fill coming after Shadow and Fernando but, if his initiation is anything to go by, he’ll certainly get there.

Denis Currie also had a good day, claiming third place on Bering Strait before he dashed off to see Ulster gain a convincing win against Oyonnax at the Kingspan Stadium.

Lynne Spence is maintaining her high standard by claiming victory in the pre-novice class for the second successive week on Jaydious Apollo, the ten year old gelding by Cougar.

She also took sixth place in the novice class and delivered two foot perfect rounds in the showjumping. TeamNewsam had a busy and successful day on Saturday with Jim taking second and third places in the pre-novice class. Emma was also out competing in the novice section while Maggie had planned to compete Intro but unfortunately her horse pulled a shoe in transit.

One of the younger competitors, thirteen year old Katie McKee slotted into fourth place on Teddy.

Meanwhile, in the Intro class, it was sweet success for a brand new combination who were making their debut performance. Congratulations go to Amy Whittle and Mullybrannon Masterplan, a four year old gelding, bred by Cormac McKay by Gatcombe who is by the wonderful Gatsby. The horse was bought by Amy’s Dad, Stuart, who broke him in and is absolutely elated with this success on his first outing.

Rachel Lockyear and Lord Gregory gave a very good account of themselves, slotting into the runner up position with Laura Sloan and Quida in third place. Helen Cunningham took fourth place on equal percentage score but with slightly less collective marks.

Showjumping was the busiest on record with well over 200 participating in this discipline. Once again the courses, which were designed by Aaron McCusker, were flowing and encouraging for all levels. Special praise must go to those competitors who remained to the bitter end, jumping as the last fragments of light were dimming.

This coming week, organisers plan to restrict the numbers entering the warm up to ensure that everyone gets jumping in their correct blackboard order.

It is therefore vitally important that competitors put their numbers on the board as soon as they have placed their entries with the Secretary.

Cross country was also busy all day, with the water, in particular, requiring a number of ‘retakes’.
