Van der Merwe rejects move to the North West

The former Ireland under-19 batsman was the subject of an offer from the North West.

However, after thinking over the move for several weeks, the South African-born player opted to stay at Stormont.

The news is a massive relief for CSNI, who have already been rocked by the departure of fast bowler Allen Coulter to neighbours CIYMS.

With Nigel Jones having moved to CI the previous winter, and Coulter gone, van der Merwe moving on would have a serious blow for the 2014 Challenge Cup winners.

CSNI have at least signed Graeme McCarter, the Ireland bowler, from Coleraine, and there is speculation that they could add another new face before the NCU Premier League season starts next month.
