From Madeira and the Canary Islands to Dubai and Thailand, new research reveals the best destinations for Northern Ireland holidaymakers looking to swap grey skies for winter sunshine.

With colder temperatures, darker evenings and plenty of rain on the way, it's hardly surprising that many people across Northern Ireland will be dreaming of escaping to somewhere a little warmer this winter.

And whether you're travelling from Belfast, Derry or elsewhere across the country, swapping the winter chill for sunshine doesn't necessarily mean booking a long-haul holiday.

New research from travel specialists eShores reveals that destinations offering temperatures of around 20°C can be reached in approximately four hours from some UK airports, while those wanting tropical heat can find temperatures exceeding 30°C further afield.

The research compares popular winter holiday destinations according to their average temperatures, helping Northern Ireland holidaymakers find the right getaway, whether that's a few days exploring somewhere new or a fortnight relaxing on a beach.

For those planning a getaway from Northern Ireland, Belfast International and Belfast City airports are obvious starting points, although some destinations may require connecting flights or departures from airports elsewhere in the UK.

Madeira and the Canary Islands: Around 20°C

For anyone looking for a break from Northern Ireland's chilly winter weather without travelling too far, Madeira could be worth considering.

The Portuguese island enjoys average winter temperatures of around 18–20°C, offering an appealing alternative to the rain and cold back home.

With its dramatic coastal scenery, traditional villages, restaurants and walking trails, Madeira is particularly well suited to travellers who enjoy exploring rather than spending every day on the beach.

Flights from some UK airports take approximately four hours, making it a possible choice for a shorter winter getaway, although Northern Ireland travellers should check connections and total journey times.

The Canary Islands offer another option, with temperatures averaging around 20–22°C and flight times of approximately four and a half hours from the UK.

Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura are popular choices for families, couples and groups of friends, with beaches, restaurants, coastal resorts and plenty of attractions.

For Northern Ireland residents hoping to escape the colder months, the islands offer the chance to enjoy outdoor dining, sightseeing and time by the pool when the weather at home is less inviting.

Cyprus is another possibility for those who prefer mild sunshine, with average winter temperatures of around 17°C and flights taking approximately five hours from the UK.

Dubai, Cape Verde and Egypt: Around 25°C

For holidaymakers who prefer warmer weather, destinations offering temperatures in the mid-twenties could provide the perfect balance between sunshine and comfort.

Cape Verde, situated off the west coast of Africa, enjoys average winter temperatures of around 20–25°C.

With beautiful beaches, coastal resorts and a relaxed atmosphere, it's an option for travellers looking to unwind, with approximate flight times of six hours from the UK.

Dubai is another popular winter destination, with temperatures of around 23–25°C during the cooler months.

The city offers a mixture of beaches, shopping, restaurants, sightseeing and family attractions, with flights from the UK typically taking around seven hours.

Egypt is also worth considering, particularly for travellers who want to combine sunshine with sightseeing or water sports.

Winter temperatures range from around 20–27°C depending on the destination and time of year, while the country's Red Sea resorts are known for their beaches, snorkelling and diving opportunities.

Barbados and St Lucia: Around 30°C

For Northern Ireland holidaymakers who would rather leave winter completely behind, the Caribbean offers the promise of warmer temperatures and tropical scenery.

Barbados can enjoy temperatures reaching around 30°C during the winter months, while St Lucia typically experiences temperatures between 24°C and 29°C.

Both destinations offer palm-lined beaches, warm seas and an opportunity to experience a completely different climate from Northern Ireland's winter.

Flights from the UK take approximately nine hours, although travellers flying from Northern Ireland may need to allow additional time for connections.

Thailand, the Maldives and Brazil: Above 30°C

Those who want guaranteed-feeling tropical heat rather than simply a little winter warmth may prefer to travel further afield, although no destination can guarantee particular weather conditions.

The Maldives experiences average temperatures of around 31°C, making it an attractive choice for couples and holidaymakers seeking a relaxing beach escape.

Thailand can reach around 32°C during the winter season, depending on the region, and offers everything from tropical islands and beach resorts to bustling cities, temples and cultural experiences.

Brazil can be hotter still, with temperatures reaching 37°C in certain regions, although its vast size means the climate varies considerably depending on where and when you visit.

For those travelling from Northern Ireland, these longer-haul destinations are likely to involve connecting flights and are generally better suited to a longer holiday rather than a quick winter break.

How to choose the right winter sun holiday

Gavin Lapidus, company director at eShores, says holidaymakers should consider the type of experience they want rather than simply choosing the hottest destination.

"Winter sun is not just about escaping the cold; it's about finding the destination that's right for the type of holiday you want. Some travellers are looking for a few days of sunshine close to home, while others want the consistently hot temperatures, stunning beaches and unique experiences that come with travelling further afield.

"What is great is that there are fantastic options at every temperature point, whether that's a long weekend in Madeira, a week in Dubai or a two-week tropical escape in Thailand. The key is matching your ideal climate to the kind of holiday experience you're looking for."

For Northern Ireland residents considering a winter holiday, comparing departures from Belfast International and Belfast City, alongside connecting routes through airports such as Manchester, London or Dublin, could help identify suitable options.

Travellers should also check the seasonal weather for their chosen resort, as average temperatures can vary depending on the month and region.

The flight times quoted in the eShores research are approximate journeys from UK airports and should not be taken as confirmed direct flight times from Northern Ireland.
