Whether you’ve invited friends over to watch the game, fired up the barbecue at the last minute or simply decided to make the most of a sunny weekend, there’s nothing like unexpected guests to make you notice every patch of brown grass, stray weed and untidy lawn edge.

The good news? While you can’t completely transform a lawn overnight, there are plenty of simple jobs that can make a dramatic difference in just 48 hours. Cheryl Harper, Managing Director of Greensleeves Lawn Care, shares her countdown to getting your lawn guest-ready in time for your next summer gathering.

48 hours to go: Give your lawn an energy boost

If your lawn has been looking a little tired after weeks of sunshine, family use and heatwaves, now is the perfect time to help it recover. A lawn biostimulant, such as Greensleeves’ Lawn Tonic treatment, works a little like an energy drink for your lawn. Rather than simply feeding the grass, it stimulates natural biological activity within the soil, helping grass recover from stress, improve colour and make better use of nutrients already in the ground.

“It’s easy to think you need a miracle cure just before guests arrive, but healthy lawns are all about building resilience,” said Cheryl. “Biostimulants help kick-start the lawn’s natural recovery processes, giving it a healthier appearance while helping it cope better with summer wear and tear.”

36 hours to go: Mow smart, not short

A freshly mown lawn is one of the quickest ways to make a garden feel tidy and well cared for, but don’t be tempted to cut the grass as short as possible.

Leaving it slightly longer helps the lawn retain moisture, protects it from the heat and creates a greener, healthier finish. Collect any clippings after mowing to give the lawn a clean appearance that’s ready for outdoor entertaining.

Did you know? Cutting more than a third of the grass height in one go can put unnecessary stress on the lawn, particularly during warm weather.

24 hours to go: Tidy the edges

If you’re short on time, focus on the finishing touches. Neat lawn edges along patios, borders and paths instantly make the whole garden look smarter, even if you haven’t had time to tackle every corner.

“It’s amazing how much difference sharp lawn edges make,” said Cheryl. “Guests might not notice every detail, but they’ll notice a garden that looks neat, tidy and well looked after.”

12 hours to go: Deal with the obvious distractions

Walk around your garden as though you’re seeing it for the first time. Pull any obvious weeds, brush away loose grass clippings, put away children’s toys, tidy hoses and move bins out of sight if possible.

If your lawn has a few worn patches, don’t panic. Positioning planters, outdoor rugs or seating can help draw attention towards the areas you want people to notice instead.

On the day: Water wisely

If your lawn needs watering, do it early in the morning rather than just before guests arrive.

A proper soak gives moisture time to reach the roots before the heat of the day, whereas watering during the afternoon often results in much of the water evaporating before the lawn can benefit.

Then all that’s left to do is sweep the patio, arrange the garden furniture and enjoy spending time outdoors!

Small jobs can make a big impression

Preparing your lawn for guests doesn’t have to mean spending an entire weekend gardening.

“A beautiful lawn isn’t about perfection,” added Cheryl. “It’s about creating a space where people want to relax and enjoy themselves. A few well-timed jobs over a couple of days can completely change how your garden looks and feels, giving you the confidence to invite people round whenever the sun comes out.”
