Ursula Meighan Chairperson of the Workers Party Women’s Committee said on Wednesday 4th March the Party will hold an online event for International Women’s Day

Ms Meighan said the event will discuss the introduction of a Femicide Law, workers rights legislation, and the impact its implementation would have on women in the workplace. The event will also discuss the party’s plans for an event to celebrate the contributions of women activists in trade unions, civil rights, social justice, and women’s rights for decades. The role that working class women played in advancing the rights of the working class has been underestimated or ignored. As part of the May Day festivities we will remember those who have gone before us.

Ms Meighan said we will celebrate those working class women who fought for rights in the workplace and in their communities. Women who organised, tenants associations, civil rights branches, and raised awareness of social justice, organised women’s rights groups, and played an important role in raising awareness of the wider class struggle. Within their local communities they led marches, protests, demonstrations, and pickets, for better services, and living conditions in their housing estates, streets, and further afield.

We will celebrate those who have gone before us and those who continue the class struggle.

These women whilst never acknowledged gave inspiration to a whole new generation of working class women and girls who continue the fight against poverty, multiple deprivations, health inequalities, violence against women and girls. The Workers Party is proud that the daughters and granddaughters of these activists are themselves active participants in the class struggle. These were ordinary women, doing extraordinary things, to better the lives of working class families, friends, neighbours, and workmates.

We continue that struggle and will salute them with music, poetry , and songs. Bread and Roses Sisters, past and present.
