Blue Gates gimmer tops January Gems

The first Saturday of 2016 saw the return of the January Gems in-lamb ewe sale to Ballymena Livestock Mart when a strong Carran Sutherland's Star daughter from the Bluegates flock of Chris and Martin Mullan topped the sale at £2,100.

She sold in-lamb to Sandelford Wolverine, an Orrisdale Viking son, and travels to the Donegal flock of Liam Brown, Letterkenny.

Second highest price of the day was also secured by the Mullan brothers with a Mullan Superfly daughter selling to £1,470, in lamb to Kiltariff Warrior a massive Cowal Viceroy son; she joins the Findrum flock of Neil Watson, Ballygawley.

Another pair of Mullan Superfly daughters from the Blue Gates pen realised £840 and £630 in the ring. They travel to the Catherine’s Bridge flock owned by the Black family, Strabane.

Robin and John Trimble’s, Curley Flock from Newry, experienced a good days trading with a pair of gimmers reaching £1,155. First into the ring was a tight skinned Teiglum Tornado daughter from a Kelso Oxygen dam. She was sold in- lamb to the new stock ram Millar’s Wallender.

This smart gimmer was purchased by AM Sloan, Kilkeel. The second gimmer to equal this top flock price was a Ballygroogan Ronaldo daughter out of a Mellor Vale Masterpiece dam and she joins the recently established Alderview Flock of Mark Patterson, Crumlin.

The Ballyhivistock flock of Samuel Simpson and Robert Calvin, saw a steady day’s trading with a top flock price of £787.50 for a Forkin’s Umar daughter selling to the Mullan brother’s Blue Gates flock in-lamb to one of the newly purchased Ballyhivistock stock rams; Drummillar Whiskey, while Adrian McCartney’s Gruig flock, realised a top price of £735 for a Humeston talent daughter in-lamb to Bregagh Walcot. She joins the Windermere flock of young breeder Bailie O’Connor.

Husband and wife team of John and Leona Young with their Kilrail House and Redford flocks also experienced steady trade throughout the sale with a Tullylagan Vantage empty ewe lamb from the Kilrail House flock securing £525 selling to G Murdock.

Averages: Blue Gates £620 for 14 sold; Curley £539 for 14 sold; Ballyhivistock £445 for eight sold; Gruig £387 for 11 and Kilrail House and Redford £278 for 18 sold.
