The figures are based on information recorded on death certificates by medical professionals and include some people who died without having had a test for the virus.

The figures, which come with a seven-day delay due to the time it takes for deaths to be registered, were published on Friday morning and cover the period up to August 14.

The death toll reported by the Department of Health, whose figures are based on people who died after testing positive, showed 558 fatalities by the same date.

NISRA say 456 of the deaths happened in hospital, 351 in care homes and the remainder in other locations such as hospices or residential addresses.

In total, 431 care home residents have now died of coronavirus with 80 of those deaths taking place in hospital.
