Co Down pizza delivery driver charged over Belfast hit-and-run

Scott Johnston, 23, was allegedly behind the wheel of a car that hit the victim on the Lisburn Road last Saturday night.

The pedestrian, aged in his 40s, was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries.

Johnston, of Springhill Heights in Bangor, Co Down, is charged with causing grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving.

He also faces counts of failing to stop, remain or report an accident where an injury occurred.

Standing in the dock at Belfast Magistrates’ Court, he confirmed that he understood the charges by nodding and replying: “Yes.”

A PSNI constable said he could connect the accused to the alleged offences.

No questions were put to the officer during the brief hearing.

Police did not object to Johnston being released on bail to live at another address in Bangor.

He is prohibited from having any contact with the victim.

District Judge Fiona Bagnall was also told that it was unnecessary to ban him from driving.

“Police have seized his car, so he doesn’t have a car at this stage,” the officer revealed.

Johnston was released from custody to return to court for an update in the case on October 25.
