According to police the cannabis had been strapped to the roof of a large horse transporter-type vehicle.

The haul, with an estimated street value of £1m, was discovered on Saturday morning after the lorry shed its load near the Blacks Road junction of the M1 in south Belfast.

Greene spoke only to confirm that he understood the charges against him.

No further details were disclosed during the brief hearing.

With the police investigation continuing, defence barrister Joel Lindsay said it would be premature to seek bail at this stage.

District Judge Peter Magill remanded the accused in custody to appear again by video-link next month.
