Editorial: Farce surrounding killer James Meehan's absconsion shows up Northern Ireland’s weak criminal justice system
News Letter editorial for Wednesday, March 25:
The extradition of an absconding killer back to Northern Ireland is the latest farcical and disgraceful saga in our criminal justice system.

James Meehan was given day release in December 2024 by our perpetually weak authorities and abused that by heading south of the border. When he was traced, it took until December 2025 – a year – for him to be extradited back to Northern Ireland.
Now he has been sentenced to 12 months in jail for this conduct, but he will only have to serve half of it. So, almost comically, he gets six months in jail for evading a year in prison. In other words, his abscond was in effect rewarded, meaning that he spent less time in prison.
Meehan got a reduced term because he pleaded guilty, but as Judge Peter Irvine KC explained “you undoubtedly had no other course but to plead”. So why did he get a reduced sentence for it? If the courts were obliged to give a reduction, it is confirmation of the farce.
It was the second time extradition proceedings had to be instigated against Meehan. When he absconded in December 2024, he was on licence for an earlier offence of being unlawfully at large.
Meehan murdered Jim McFadden and got a life term for that heinous crime in 2009. But life does not mean anything even approaching life in Northern Ireland – he only had to serve a minimum 14 years for the killing.
This is only the latest thug to make a mockery of our sentencing and detention. For more than a decade this newspaper has reported on disgracefully light sentences for dissident terrorists who take life or plan to take life.
We reported on the appalling bail system, in which the weak courts – under the structures established by weak politicians – grant bail to men and women who should never get such. And even when they breach bail terms or abscond, they get a slap on the wrists. What an insult to victims, in this case the late Jim McFadden.
