Let children enjoy their sport in the great outdoors

Re Peter Robinson’s column (‘Outdoor sport has emotional and health benefits for children, so we need to see need to see evidence why it is banned,’ February 26, see link below).

It is now over 40 years since my wife and I ( both sports playing people) graduated from the New University of Ulster Coleraine with its widespread campus and expertly maintained grounds. I walk frequently there and on the trail which surrounds the sports playing pitches .

They look especially well on a cool crisp morning as I write. It is sad though that our 11-year-old grandson cannot play on these .

He trained at and played football through primary school and Coleraine FC Youths ably assisted by volunteer coaches.

He is missing the interaction, the big fresh outdoors and his ‘footy’. The plea is addressed to the powers that be, to release us all from what we have borne this last year and to enjoy the great outdoors on our doorstep.
