Cookstown SDLP Councillor Kerri Hughes has written to the Economy Minister Diane Dodds seeking clarification of the date businesses in the fitness industry will be able to re-open.

Councillor Hughes said today that she had been contacted by numerous fitness studio owners concerned at the lack of information about when they can re-open.

“The Minister has announced that some contact retail businesses such as the hair and beauty industry may be allowed to open on Monday 6th July, however no specific announcement has been made regarding the fitness industry – particularly the one-to-one coaching environment in a fitness studio.

“In a one-to-one fitness studio environment, clients and trainers can practice social distancing, unlike the close personal contact required by a hairdresser or beautician.

“Exercise helps with both physical and mental wellbeing and, because of the Covid-19 lockdown, many people would feel a benefit from being allowed toresume some form of structured physical activity.

“While I welcome the news that hairdressers and beauticians will be opening their doors on 6th July, there needs to be more information on when other ‘contact retail’ businesses can re-open.

“I have written to the Economy Minister seeking clarification of the date that fitness studio owners will be able to open so that they can prepare for their ‘new normal’ too.”
