DUP pays tribute to ex-councillor whose service was characterised by 'loyalty, hard work and a genuine concern for others'

The DUP has paid tribute to former Newtownabbey councillor whose public service was characterised by “loyalty, hard work and a genuine concern for others”.

Billy DeCourcy served as a DUP councillor on Newtownabbey Borough Council from 2001 until 2014, giving many years of dedicated service to the people of the Borough and, in particular, the Rathcoole community.

It is understood he was in his mid-nineties.

In a joint statement, Phillip Brett MLA and Lord Dodds of Duncairn said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Billy DeCourcy.

"Billy was a distinguished public servant, a stalwart of the Democratic Unionist Party and someone who devoted much of his life to serving his community.

“Throughout his years on Newtownabbey Borough Council, including his service as Mayor, Billy earned enormous respect for his commitment to local people and his determination to get things done.

“His roots in Rathcoole ran deep. He knew the community, understood its people and was always ready to help anyone who came to him for assistance.

“His public service was characterised by loyalty, hard work and a genuine concern for others.”

Billy remained faithful to the Democratic Unionist Party throughout his life, the party said.

"Long after his time as an elected representative had ended, he continued to support the party and its representatives with the same enthusiasm and commitment he had always shown.

“Those of us who had the privilege of knowing Billy will remember not only his distinguished record of public service, but also his warmth, humour, wisdom and friendship.

“He leaves behind a proud legacy of service to Newtownabbey, Rathcoole and the Democratic Unionist Party.”

Their thoughts and prayers are with Billy’s family and all those who loved him at this sad time.

The statement ended: “‘Well done, thou good and faithful servant.’ — Matthew 25:21”.
