Nigel Dodds to take title ‘Lord Dodds of Duncairn’

Former North Belfast MP Nigel Dodds will have the title ‘Lord Dodds of Duncairn’ when he takes his seat in the upper house next month.

The long-serving DUP politician was awarded a life peerage in the Dissolution Honours List.

His official title was announced on Friday (18 September).

Mr Dodds said: “The Duncairn ward is where I started out on my career as an elected representative.

“It is at the heart of the Castle district electoral area of North Belfast where I was first elected as a councillor on Belfast City Council in 1985.

“My first door-to-door canvass was in this part of the Shore Road and North Queen Street and it has been my honour and privilege to serve the people of this area and wider north Belfast for over 34 years.”

Twice serving as Lord Mayor of Belfast before becoming an MLA and Executive minister at Stormont, Mr Dodds was elected to Westminster in June 2001 and served for 18 years until 2019.

He was awarded the OBE in 1997 and appointed to the Privy Council in 2010.

Mr Dodds added: “I now look forward to the next stage of public life where I intend to continue to be a positive voice for Northern Ireland at Westminster and at home.”
