It marks a return to the Irish League for the 28-year-old as the former Republic of Ireland under 21 international previously proved impressive at Warrenpoint Town.

McCarey, who was between the posts this season for Dundalk in the Europa League group stages, took to social media to celebrate finalising the move.

He posted on Twitter: “Delighted to be onboard. Looking forward to the challenge ahead. Just a note on my time with Dundalk its fair to say it didn’t go as I thought but would like to wish everyone involved all the best going forward”.

McCarey attended training this week for the Solitude club.

McCarey featured in senior international squads under Giovanni Trapattoni and Martin O’Neill. He counts Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ross County among former clubs alongside loan spells including Portsmouth and Bury.
