'Do the honourable thing and walk away': Northern Irish boss under increased pressure as ex-Celtic striker claims 'job too big for him'

Former Northern Ireland international Stephen Robinson insists “I’m Aberdeen manager until I’m told otherwise” after pressure continued to mount on his position following Saturday’s 4-0 home defeat to Hibernian.

Robinson was appointed Dons boss in March after enjoying a hugely successful four-year spell at St Mirren, where he celebrated League Cup glory and recorded three top-half Premiership finishes.

The 51-year-old has struggled throughout his time at Pittodrie with Aberdeen’s heavy weekend defeat – a third consecutive league loss – leaving them sitting just two points above bottom side Kilmarnock in 11th.

Robinson has only taken charge of 28 matches as Aberdeen manager, winning 11 and drawing five, but speculation is already surrounding his potential exit.

“I’ve got belief in my ability, you don’t manage 500 games if you don’t,” said Robinson in his post-match press conference. “It’s a difficult situation at the moment for myself, for the players, for the club.

"I will keep fighting until I’m told otherwise. Not at this moment (there’s been no talk of a meeting with club).

"I don't make that decision, I’m Aberdeen manager until I’m told otherwise...I’m sure there will be conversations, I can’t tell you what that will be.

"I don’t make the decision whether I survive that or not, I’ll keep fighting until somebody tells me different

"There’s no hiding away from it, we have a fight on our hands and we need people to stand up and fight.

"The blame will fall on me no matter what, deservedly so at times, but I will keep fighting as hard as I can...I have turned situations around many times and you need everybody to stand up.

"With our current form, potentially (it’s a relegation fight), but you’d like to think we wouldn’t be in a relegation fight and we can change this very quickly.”

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton believes Robinson should walk away from his position and doesn’t see the Northern Irishman surviving a latest defeat.

"At the start of the season it was all about ‘it’s my team’, it’s a case where it feels the club is too big for him, the job is too big for him,” said Sutton on Sky Sports. “Maybe he should do the honourable thing and walk away, but it’ll probably end in the sack.”

Kris Boyd, a two-time Scottish title winner with Rangers, insists Robinson should stick with the job until told otherwise – but predicts the club will make a change.

"He’s never going to walk away, he signed a contract,” said Boyd. “Nobody in their right mind is going to walk away, absolutely not.

"If you sign a contract, there’s no way you’re walking away. He came in last season, his job was to keep Aberdeen in the league and he did that.

"The Aberdeen fans didn’t really take to him...if you go back to last season, it was a case of panic, Stephen Robinson saved them.

"You can’t knock what he did at St Mirren, if you give him time – he’s not going to get time at Aberdeen, the fans have had enough.

"It’s over for Stephen Robinson and it’s probably what he’s looking for...if you listen to his interviews, it’s a case of he’d rather be anywhere else but Aberdeen, I don’t blame him.

"I would be very surprised if he’s in charge of Aberdeen when we come back from the international break.”
