'I’m not sure if it’s going to be fine': Liverpool star major injury doubt for crunch Northern Ireland showdown

Hungary talisman Dominik Szoboszlai is an injury doubt for a crunch Nations League clash against Northern Ireland with Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola saying he’s “definitely not 100 per cent” following Sunday’s Premier League win over Crystal Palace.

Szoboszlai is Hungary’s star performer and will be key to their chances of leapfrogging Northern Ireland in the race to seal League A promotion.

Michael O’Neill’s side travel to Budapest on November 17 – three days after hosting Ukraine at Windsor Park in Belfast – with many expecting it will decide who seals top spot in the League B group.

Northern Ireland sit one point ahead of Hungary after going unbeaten through their first four games without conceding a goal.

Szoboszlai, who provided an assist for Alexis Mac Allister as the Reds defeated Palace 3-1 this weekend, was substituted after 69 minutes.

The 26-year-old missed five of Liverpool’s six games following the last international break after starting in all four matches for Hungary and only started his first club game since in Wednesday’s Champions League defeat to Fenerbahce.

Szoboszlai is set to be assessed by Liverpool’s medical staff before a final decision on his international involvement is made, but Iraola has stressed he doesn’t want to lose one of his top players once again.

“I think he extended a little bit the knee,” said Iraola in his post-match press conference. “He was fine, but not 100 per cent.

“The last thing we need now is to lose players in international games. Last time in the international break, we lost three players, three very important players.

“So now I’m praying. It’s the last thing we need. He has to be careful, see if he can play with the national team or not, but we will see. And also hope that it doesn’t happen like the other break where we lost Alex (Isak), Cody (Gakpo) and Dom.

“So touch wood, we are in a better place in two weeks.”

While Iraola hinted he’d rather Szoboszlai doesn’t travel for national team duties by saying “I know what I want”, the Reds boss understands the player’s desire to represent his country.

“I’m sure that Dom, if he is fine, he will want to go,” added Iraola. “But I’m not sure if it’s going to be fine.

“I know that he will do everything to go because he loves to play with the national team. But he was not 100 per cent now when he finished the game.”
