Irish League relegation response leads to 'right person' and 'right player' transfer move

Glenavon boss Michael O’Connor has celebrated the signing of Peter Maguire as bringing on board both the “right person” and “right player”.

The Lurgan Blues have responded to top-flight relegation for the first time in over two decades with seven points from the opening four games of the second-tier Championship season.

A demanding summer transfer window has featured numerous exits and arrivals - with 23-year-old Maguire the latest to sign up at Mourneview Park.

Maguire counts Ballinamallard United, Sligo Rovers and Dungannon Swifts as past clubs, with the left-footed defender bringing impressive experience against highly-rated opposition.

“We’re delighted to have Peter on board,” said O’Connor on the official Glenavon social media platforms. “He comes with good pedigree having played over 20 games for Dungannon last year.”

O’Connor highlighted Maguire’s personal character as key on top of his playing qualities.

"I’ve said it every time I’m asked that we need to sign the right person as much as the right player and I believe in Peter we have signed just that...he’s a great character and we believe he’s developing into a great player as well which will only benefit us moving forward.

“Peter will add real competition for places in the defensive department.

"He’s at a good age and has decent experience from playing in this league with Ballinamallard, which is exactly what we need to challenge for promotion.”
