Podium success for Northern Ireland riders at opening round of 2026 Scottish Motocross Championship

The opening round of the 2026 Scottish Motocross Championship took place at Tain in the Highlands of Scotland last weekend, and local riders certainly enjoyed their fair share of success.

Robbie McCullough from Castlederg was the overall winner of the Adult ‘B’ class on his KTM 450. The 17-year-old secured the overall victory with two first-place finishes in races one and two.

It could have been a clean sweep if not for a mechanical issue in race three, when he had to settle for second place behind Owen Macdonald.

McCullough said: “The front forks collapsed, but I was still able to finish, albeit second. The win was a great start to the new season.”

Rory Cultra was unlucky not to secure the overall victory in the Adult ‘C’ class. The Kilclief rider won his opening race on the Ross Quarry Products Ltd Yamaha YZ250 after a great tussle with Larne rider Myles Elliott.

In race two he led in the early stages before dropping to fourth, but battled back to finish second behind Douglas Goodwill.

The 23-year-old was involved in a five-bike pile-up at the start of race three but fought his way back into tenth before another crash over a jump left Cultra down in 25th place. Another fightback saw him take the chequered flag in ninth to secure second overall.

Twenty-one-year-old Elliott made amends for a disappointing race two, where he finished 12th on the UPS Lisburn Rd Honda 450, by claiming fourth in race three to finish third overall.

It was also good to see Loughbrickland’s Jason Meara back in action, finishing sixth overall in the MX1 Pro class.

The Moto-Cycle Yamaha rider reflected: “I went in with no expectations. I was just happy to be back again after such a long time away. In race one, I was in fourth until the last lap, when I made a stupid mistake and finished fifth.

“Race two saw me finish fifth again, and in the final race, I had nothing left to give. I finished seventh, mainly due to the lack of bike time. I was sixth overall and just delighted to be back behind the gate racing again.”

Ballyclare teenager Charley Irwin finished seventh overall at Tain on the Discount Beds 450 Honda.

He finished seventh in race one, fought back to eighth in race two after avoiding a first-corner crash, and charged from the back to an impressive fifth in race three after hitting the bank at turn one.

“All in all, I was happy with seventh overall,” said Irwin.

In the Pro MX2 class, Glenn McCormick brought the Chambers KTM home in fourth overall behind Charley Heyman.

“I’m glad to get the first race of the season out of the way. The bike was brilliant — I just wasn’t good enough on the day, and that’s disappointing,” said McCormick.

“We will regroup and head to Hawkstone Park for the first round of the British Championship this weekend.”

Omagh’s Lewis Spratt overcame illness to finish second overall in Saturday’s MX2 Youth races at Tain before claiming ninth overall in the MX2 Pro class on Sunday aboard the Jet Products Yamaha.

“I was a bit under the weather over the weekend, but to come away with a second and ninth overall was OK,” added Spratt.
