Northern Ireland star linked with £6million move to Celtic from Crystal Palace

Northern Ireland international Justin Devenny is reportedly a £6million target for Celtic in the closing stages of this summer’s transfer window.

Scotland-born Devenny came through the ranks at Kilmarnock before moving to Airdrieonians, where he made 42 league appearances.

The 22-year-old sealed a transfer to Premier League outfit Crystal Palace in August 2023 and has since played 44 times in England’s top-flight, including 21 last term for the Eagles.

Devenny has enjoyed silverware success with Palace – he was an unused substitute in their FA Cup final victory over Manchester City in 2025 and scored the decisive penalty in a shoot-out Community Shield success against Liverpool at Wembley a matter of months later.

Palace reigned supreme in last season’s Conference League with Devenny making six appearances during their run to the title.

Devenny hasn’t been included in the matchday squad for either of Palace’s opening two Premier League matches of the new season and has now been linked with interest from his homeland.

The Herald have reported reigning Scottish champions Celtic “have taken an interest” in Devenny, who is supposedly valued at £6million by his current club.

It has already been a big summer for Northern Ireland’s top talent with Shea Charles breaking the transfer fee record with his move to Fulham from Southampton while younger brother Pierce joined Manchester City before being sent on loan to Queens Park Rangers.

Ethan Galbraith made an eight-figure switch to Stoke City from Championship rivals Swansea City and Trai Hume has been linked with interest from Everton, although Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris said there was “no question” the defender would be staying.

A host of English Championship clubs, including Middlesbrough, Southampton and Preston, have been linked with Devenny, but a move to Celtic could see him challenging for major domestic honours.

Italian outfit Cagliari are also rumoured to be interested in Devenny, who has developed into an important player for Northern Ireland.

Devenny featured in five of Northern Ireland’s six World Cup qualifying group matches last year and started in a play-off semi-final loss to Italy in March.

He also played in both of June’s friendlies against Guinea and France, bringing his senior cap tally to 14, and will have a key role for Michael O’Neill’s side in the Nations League, which gets underway with a trip to Georgia on September 25.

Devenny has been deployed at left wing-back for Northern Ireland and O’Neill previously praised his versatility.

"That is not his natural position but Justin has the attributes to play there,” he said last year. “Athletically and technically he is very good.

"At times it is tricky for him defensively with his distances, but all round he is a really good footballer, not only with the goal but the balls he delivers.

"We haven't had a left-footer like that since Brunty [Chris Brunt] so it is nice we have found him."

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill said he was “hopeful” of signing more players before the Scottish transfer window closes after Saturday’s 2-1 win over Falkirk.
