A decision over whether or not the Isle of Man TT will go ahead in 2021 could be announced before Christmas.

The Isle of Man’s treasury minister says he expects a decision in the ‘next couple of months’, with Manx businesses calling for clarity over the prospects of the world-famous event taking place next year so that they can start planning ahead.

The TT and Classic TT/Manx Grand Prix meetings were cancelled this year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, resulting in a significant hit to the island’s economy.

Speaking to Manx Radio, Alf Cannan said: “It is getting very, very close consideration with Laurence Skelly (Minister for Enterprise) and the Department for Enterprise and I know they are working up their plans and options.

“I expect in due course Council will look at this very carefully and doubtless the chief minister and Mr Skelly will be bringing forward whatever decisions are made at some point in the next couple of months.”

The 2021 Isle of Man TT is scheduled to take place from Saturday, May 29 to Friday, June 11.

The Covid-19 had a detrimental impact on the road racing calendar this year, with the North West 200 and all Irish national events – with exception of September’s rescheduled Cookstown 100 – called off against the backdrop of the pandemic.
